We are currently in Riga, Latvia and are having a hard time finding a good Vet. We have been to several Vets over the past three weeks trying to get some interest in our little kitten.
We have also been to one vet which we consider the best 7 times. Each time we have been they have just taken x-rays, given the cat a shot and then sent us on our way. Eastern Europe is not known for being overly friendly and caring. It has been extremely hard to get any information from the Vet on what exactly we should be doing to care for our pet.
But this last we time our poor little cat, could not walk at all, and was in sever pain when ever we picked him up. Last night, we took him to the vet, expecting more of the same … that they would take an x-ray, give him a shot and send us away again.
But this time they noticed on the x-ray that there were parts of his bone wall (legs, shoulder and rips) growing unevenly … I believe this is called Osteitis? The vet just said, bone inflamation.
The young Russian vet said this is very serious and we need to come back tomorrow for another round of intravenous fluids and then we must give him daily shots (Prednisolone) for the next two weeks. They stuck a intravious needle into his arm, gave him intravienous fluids, some shots and then sent us on our way with the intravenious needle still in his arm.
The cat is in extreme pain with the needle still in his arm and has been crying, actually screaming in pain all night. We called the all night clinic and they said it is ok, just bring him in the following day for more intravenious fluids and he will get used to the needle. We also asked the Vets how Freddy could have got in to this situation, They (4), seemed very busy and said they didn't know.
Has anyone else experienced this situation with their cat?
We just want to know more about what is going on with our little buddy and if their is anything else we might be able to do.

Sorry to hear about your situation. I moved to Cyprus and the vets are not a lot better here either, which is quite worrying. I did some searching on the internet and found the following details of an animal welfare organisation in Riga. Perhaps if you contact them, they can give you advice or at least recommend whom they believe to be the best vet in the area.
The Animals' Friend was set up in 1995 by Christine Chilver, under the guidance of the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). It is a registered charity in Latvia and has applied for membership of the WSPA. The Animals' Friend has its headquarters in Riga, Latvia.
Objectives:
•to improve animal welfare in Latvia
•to help with legislation on animal protection
•to improve veterinary training and practice
•to promote humane treatment of animals by public education
•to raise funds for animal welfare
